Charity made her way out of the castle, blinded by sorrow. Nothing had ever hurt her so much, no physical pain could ever ammount to more torture than she was in now. She was stone as she walked into the chilly waters of the lake. It made small rings around her ankles before she walked further, submerging herself waist deep in it. No, she wasn't about to kill herself. The coward sneaks to death; the brave live on. She just needed to feel something.
So many memeroies were all around her. So many places she had sat with Haylee and before she had come to realize it she had started to love her child. With the help of others she had realized Haylee wasn't a burden, she was a miracle. Something to live for, something to be good for. Now she was gone, leaving only hurtful memories behind.
"There is no greater sorrow than to recall in misery the time when we were happy." Charity whispered, the words seeming to skim the water around her. It was a quote by Dante, one she had not understood when she had first heard it. But now, the meaning might as well have been writen in bold. Charity blinked a few times, barely felling the hot salty tears make their way down her face.

Grayson had been waiting for the rain clouds to disappear before he headed outside to do some of his studies, but as he looked up at the sky, he reasoned that these clouds weren't going anywhere. He cursed the weather across the pond and suddenly wished that he was back in America where everything was familiar. He ran a hand through his short dark hair and made his was through the green space between the castle and the lake.
His eyes were still adjusting to the gloomy, misty weather when he saw Charity, waist deep in the waters of the Black Lake. He raised an eyebrow and slowly walked towards her, "You know...I would have thought that someone like you would have been more savvy about going into the water in this kind of weather, I mean, it's practically freezing outside and-" He saw an expression on his face that made him stop cold.
"Charity?" He questioned curiously, his voice quivered at the end. He hadn't stopped thinking about her and Haylee since their first encounter. He had some sort of weird attachment to them both.

Charity didn't bother to look back at the voice. She knew it was Grayson before he had started talking. She wasn't sure if she wanted to see him or not. He may have been the last person she wanted to see but in some weird way he was all she wanted.
She took a few deep breaths, not sure of what to say. It was one thing to understand Haylee was dead but to say it out loud would be like accepting it. Whenever she thought about it her heart raced and took her back to that moment in time that she couldn't change.
"Haylee... she'd dead..." She wasn't sure if he could hear her as she kept her voice low, scared of what a few words could do. With a flick of a wand and a few careless words, you could kill someone.

The wind seemed to push the words toward Grayson and he caught them, lingering in the air. If he had heard Charity correctly, Haylee was dead. His head immediately starting swimming with ideas. How it had happened, who had done it, what he was going to do. He wasn't sure what had made him care so much. There was something about Charity. Something about her child that had captivated him and he-
He caught himself before he went any further. He was staring at a mother who had just lost her child. He knew that he had to do something, and before he knew it, he had waded into the water with her and put his arms around her, hugging her cold body to his warm one.
He didn't say anything, his words seemed superfluous at the moment and he didn't want to risk upsetting her in this state. Instead he stroked her hair, trying to comfort her as best as he knew how.

Charity allowed the warmth to spread through her a moment before she was pushing against Grayson, trying to get away from him.
"Don't." Charity shook her head, holding a hand to her face as she struggled not to look at him. He couldn't touch her because now she knew for sure. She was nothing. Nothing worth comforting. Everything she'd done, all the families she had killed, she was nothing but a ruthless Death Eater. Her anger got the best of her and she was liable to hurt anyone at any second. Anyone she cared about would only end up hurt by her.
"Don't. I don't deserve your comfort. I don't deserve anything." Charity heel caught on a root and she feel back, coming up soak and shaking. "It was me... I did it. I killed her."

Grayson fought her, trying to get her to stay with him, but she was freaking out. She immediately freed herself and tripped over a root and ended up in the water. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her up so that she couldn't fall over again, "Charity....Charity, slow down. Calm down." He said softly, and brushed some of her wet locks away from her face, "You-" Her second statement had caught him a little off guard. He was sure that she was remembering incorrectly. She couldn't have killed her own daughter, "Charity...You wouldn't have killed your own daughter...just tell me what happened. It's okay.... Let me help you. I can help you. I will help you." He breathed, still holding onto her tightly.

Charity struggled against him, shaking her head continiously. She didn't want to tell anyone. She didn't want anyone to know what she had just done. Didn't want anyone to realize what a bad person she was, especially Gray.
"I did..." Charity voice was low, broken. She replayed the scene over and over, Haylee's scared face filling her vision over and over. "She made me so mad. Then, then the fire. She was trying to take him away. Haylee needed him. And then... then. then...." Her words came in hiccups as she tried to think. "Then the spell and she moved and it... it... hit her. My baby!"

Grayson was struggling to keep her in check, she seemed like she was going to tear away from him at any moment and run in the other direction, then he would never know what had happened, "Charity...who is she? You keep saying she made you so mad. She was trying to take him away...She moved..." He gently let go of her arm and tried a new tactic; he gathered her face in his hands and cupped her chin with his hands, "Slow down." He suggested lightly and brushed a piece of her red hair away from her face again, he realized that his hands were shaking. He was pretty sure that Charity had killed her own daughter, but he was desperately trying not to pass judgement, "Please slow down. Start at the beginning."

Charity shook her head, trying to clear it. She didn't want to relive it. She didn't want to be known as the girl who killed her own daughter and left her to burn. "Grayson..." She tried to slow down, to breath.
"We were just sitting there, playing. Haylee was so happy..." He voice broke at the end as she tried to think. "Quinn came, said theat the Dark Lord wanted me and I got mad. She always took it from me. Everything I've ever had she's taken from me. It isn't fair. And so it esculated and we started throwing curses." charity shook her head, a fresh wave of sobs raking through her body.
"Then she used fiendfyre and it was so close to my baby. So close to burning Haylee that I needed to protect her. Then... then I used the killing curse and Quinn moved. My baby!" Charity was shaking, partially from the cold but mostly from the way she was telling it. Haylee was dead and there was nothing she could do about it. She was dead as could be.

Grayson stared at her for a long moment, there was a lump in his throat making him unable to talk for a moment. So he continued to stare, his eyes clouding over slightly. He finally was able to pinpoint why he had such an attachment to Charity and Haylee. Why he felt such a fierce protectiveness. His sister had been in a similar situation a long time ago, when he was just a kid. But then he had seen his sister and her son get murdered before his eyes by a muggle. He hadn't wanted the same thing to happen to them.
"It's not your fault." He managed to breath aloud and then shook his head, "Not all your fault, Charity...Please." He knew that some of it was indeed her fault, but it was probably just as much this Quinn girl's.

Charity pulled away, wrapping her arms around herself. "You'll never get anywhere in life blaming your mistakes on someone else. This one was all me. That's why they're Unforgivable curses. Besides, there is no mistakes in life, only lessons." Charity breathed, trying to bring back her old self. Her old stature. She couldn't be vulnerable. Couldn't be Quinn. She still needed to tel the Dark Lord and she wasn't sure if she'd make it out alive anyways.
"Get out of the lake, Galloway, you're going to get sick." Charity commented as she herself made her way out of the lake, ringing out her soaked hair.

Grayson immediately snapped back into reality and made his way out of the lake. He cursed himself for getting into the freezing lake as soon as he stepped out and a gust of wind blew by, making his soaking clothing even more wet. He pulled his shirt off over his head and rung it out on the shore, "Charity, that doesn't mean that you have to go this alone. Or close up like I know you want to." He said aloud and then looked at her. He looked down at his shoes and slipped them off, they were soaked anyway, "Glad to know that you care about my health just as much as I care about your mental stability."

Charity rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "Galloway, going through it alone is the Charity way. You can't honestly think that I'm just suddenly going to change. This in't the first person I've loved to die." Charity shook slightly from the cold as she cocked an eyebrow.
"Don't tell anyone about this, Grayson, or so help you God I will come after you." Charity laughed and rolled her eyes again, resorting back to Charity. This is what she needed. She needed to be Charity or everything would be ruined. She couldn't do anything but nearly cry without her mask and soon enough she would sink into depression. Life isn't about getting hung up on things, it's about overcoming it.

Grayson threw his shirt over his shoulder and stared at her for a long time. Maybe this was her way of coping with what had happened, but he knew that no mother would be able to handle this alone. He would try and be there for her in the most subtle was possible, "Right. Sudden change is extremely out of character for you. I can't imagine you any other way than your normal, wonderful self. No one will ever know what you've said to me, Charity. I promise." He said, trying to sound dull and uninterested even though he was a live wire, "I trust that you've cleaned up the...mess?" He questioned and then looked at her.

Charity nearly lost her breath, not able to speak at the moment. How dare he call it a mess as if a puppy had piddled on the floor. She regained her composure as she crossed her arms.
"The fiendfyre did. I'm sure they must've put it out by now." She muttered coldly as she made her way to him, trying to change the topic away from Haylee. If they continued, she was sure to break. "You know, Grayson, I was under the impression that all Americans are fat. But this...?" Charity ran her hand over his chest, a sly smile coming to her lips. "Impressive."
