James simple rolled his eyes and put his arm around her so he could push through at the people to the stairs. They made it to the stairs and he started his descent, shrugging. "No, I really don't. It keeps me quite entertained. Just like you do. I hate when girls pretend they're something they're not. Like not interested in me. That always gets me." James said it with a serious face as, looking back up the steep stairs to see if she needed any help. He held out his hand in case.

Lily cast a glance at his hand that was casually thrown over his shoulders. She raised her eyebrows as if to say, 'Really?' but she let it stay. He was trying to get them through with as little struggle as possible and for that she was mostly grateful. He let go when they reached the stairs and she stumbled a little bit on the first. It was his comment about people pretending to be something they're not. Rich...coming from the boy who did exactly that. She knew that James wasn't all bad. Underneath his macho bravado was someone who was caring and kind. She couldn't understand why he didn't just let that part come through.
She grabbed at the rail, ignoring his hand completely and catching herself right before she fell, "Well-" She scoffed and managed to right herself. She pulled at the hem of her skirt and rushed down the rest of the stairs, stopping at the landing to wait for him, "I personally am not interested. But I know for certain that Mary Macdonald most certainly is." She laughed, "I heard her talking about your performance at the match last week. Very impressive, by the way." She said, pushing some of her hair behind her ear.

James frowned in disgust as he finished the steps, looking at Lily. He was tired of playing this game already. It seemed they were always playing games whenever they were together. Suddenly James wasn't all too sure that Lily actually knew of his feelings towards her. That would be impossible though. He'd made it well known how much he's liked her since their first year. James made a move towards Lily, barricading her against the wall and him. James' hands reached out to complete the cage.
"Can I be completely honest with you Lily? I don't notice anybody but you?I've never even heard of that girl, much less carried on a proper conversation with her." James smiled kindly down at her, well aware of his tall stature.

Lily dropped her bag and stared up at him, feeling her mouth go a little dry. He was exceedingly tall, towering a little over a foot over her 5'4" stature. She suddenly felt very small. She tried her best to listen what he was saying and not give any of her emotions away by the looks on her face. Of course she had surmised this about him already, he had basically made it clear to her his feelings. She just...well she wasn't quite sure how she felt about him, "You-"
"I-"
"Erm-" She stared up and him and used her pointer finger to point at his chest. It was time that she let him know how she felt, "You, Potter, are an arrogant bully who can't be bothered to show his true feelings about anything!" She said and locked eyes with him in an unrelenting stare. She had always had a hard time controlling her anger and she was beginning to let that show, "You never stop teasing Severus. You never stop showing off. You hex students just for the fun of it and honestly? I think you're probably one of the most obnoxious people that I have ever met." She could feel her face growing more and more red with contempt and anxiety.

James couldn't help but bite his lip. This was a very dangerous situation to get turned on in but he couldn't help it. She was telling a child not to do something. What is the child going to do? Go right ahead and do it when their backs are turned. James could be very immature. He sucked in a deep breath and let it out on a sigh, tittering as he shook his head. "Surprisingly, I can deal with that. A lot of people think that. But you see something different, Lil, don't you? You see right through this look, don't you?" James' smile was slow this time, his eyes traveling back up to meet hers, looking like a beaten puppy.
"You have to admit that sometimes you just want to jump my bones and you don't know why. Sometimes I just cross your mind. Don'tt I? I've always been here for you, Lily, even when Severus called you a Mudblood. Hasn't he always harbored those feelings towards you? I've never even let it cross my mind." James reached out tenderly and drew a strand of hair behind her ear with an innocent grin.
"You haunt me, Lily, every time I close my eyes I am left to wonder why you aren't mine yet. I'll give you as much time as yo want, Lil, 'll always be here. Waiting for you."

The puppy dog eyes. Lily had always been a sucker for the puppy dog eyes. She stared at him, trying to keep her face blank, but she was pretty sure that her features had already softened. Quick to anger and Quick to trust...That's the way her parents had always described her. She listened as he pinned her on seeing something else in him. It was true. She did. She wanted to see the good in him. She wanted to be the one who drew it out of him...however, she would never admit that aloud. She felt her face grow even more hot when he touched her, brushing her hair back.
"James-" His name came out a bit tentatively. It had been a while since she had called him by his first name. Normally it was Potter. Or Bloody Arrogant Potter. Or something along those lines. Then the jumping his bones part of the conversation sank in and she grumbled, "Honestly? You had to ruin that perfectly good speech with...You want to jump my bones?!" She asked and ducked under his arm to escape his cage like stance, "That's what I hate about you, Potter. One minute you're letting that nice guy show and the next you're back to being a complete and total arse!"

James let out an angry breath, leaning forward to slam his head into the brick. He ran a rough hand through his hair as he turned toward Lily, watching her turn away like so many times before. He hated that. He knew he had a habit of slipping between the two personalities. He just couldn't help it. Arrogant James was as much a part of him as kind James.Arrogance always seemed to beat Mr. Nice Guy back though.
"Wait..." James voice was rough and he cursed himself for that. "Don't just leave like that again, Lily. I know I said I can wait forever but I'm so tired of waiting it isn't even funny. I hang off you're every word in hopes that one day you'll actually say you like more or something stupid like that. But I know you're too smart for that. Maybe you would be better off with Remus. I don't know. I just know that I'm so damned selfish that I want you all to myself because I want to be exactly like you. Kind and caring without reserve, seeing the good in someone despite how arrogant they are." James broke off and shook his head, he'd already tried the speech part.
"Right, Evans. That's the end of that. Speech didn't work the first time it isn't going to work a second time. You can finish walking away now. I'm out of tricks."

Lily knew she was going to be kicking herself for this one later, but the words began slipping out before she had a chance to stop them, "Then maybe you should just stop waiting, Potter." She muttered and mentally groaned. Oh yes. What a perfect thing to say. She thought to herself. It hadn't been at all what she was thinking. What she was really thinking was how much she wanted to give him a chance...she did see the good in him. Her eyes avoided his gaze and she realized that she had left her bag sitting at his feet. She absentmindedly walked closer to him and bent to pick it up. Some of her things had fallen out and she began shoving them back into the bag with force. She stood up and pulled it over her shoulder, facing him.
She stood on her tip-toes so that she could reach and her hand instinctively went to his hair, flattening one of the strands that was standing straight up in his messy locks, "You look better this way, trust me." She said with a sigh and dropped her hand to her side.

James resisted the urge to run his hand through his hair again. Lily was close to him, had touched him. He dug his fingers into his sides to keep them from reaching out. Lily had told him to move on. He would. It was the first time she had said anything about it. He would do anything for her, no matter how contradictory she was acting. He smiled, allowing his cockiness to fill the quiet room.
"Right. Move on. Perhaps with your fabulous hair tips I'll have the girls throwing themselves at my feet and feeding me grapes." He muttered sarcastically, daring to move his hands up and shoving them deep into his pockets.

"You already have the girls throwing themselves at your feet, Potter and you know it." Lily said and smiled slightly, "I'm sure you'll find the right girl for you somewhere." She realized she was still pretty close to him and with an awkward cough, she took a step back, running her fingers through her hair. She pushed it over her shoulder and then smiled at him. Her eyes looked past him and caught sight of the setting sun in one of the windows.
"Oh no." She said and dug through her bag, looking for a watch or something to tell her the time. She finally found it and groaned, "Going to be late." She said in a little bit of a panic. She knew that the Slug Club Dinner started at 8. And she had unsuccessfully found a date in the past month. How lovely. Alone yet again for another Slug Club meeting. At least Professor Slughorn would be there to talk her ear off and keep her mildly entertained, "Slug Club Dinner." She explained hurriedly and walked toward the door, "I'll see you around, Potter."

James followed behind her, not happy to be left without a goodbye. Goodbyes involved hugs to him. "Who you going with? Remus?" He inquired curiously, letting some envy cut into his voice. If she was going with him James wouldn't talk to Remus for the next month. Everyone knew Lily was off limits. "Or how about Snape?" He muttered under his breath, sneering at the ground.
Snape seemed to be the only one that didn't get that James had claim over Lily. He also didn't seem to be able to grasp the fact that he was probably the last person in the world Lily would give a chance. James snickered at that, feeling some relief by that thought.

Lily turned around at the sound of his voice and was surprised to see that he had been following behind her. She folded her arms across her chest as she stared at him, "I will be attending alone, James. I haven't asked anyone to be my date...nor has anyone asked me." She said, not appreciating his tone. Here they went again. It was like they were perpetually caught in this circle. It was beginning to get tiresome, but she wouldn't be the one to back down. It wasn't in her nature, "I'm sure that Remus has his own date."
"And Severus-" She emphasized his first name, frustrated that James always used Snape, "I haven't talked to him in a while." Truth was she hadn't talked to him since the Mudblood incident. He had tried to apologize a lot, but none of them felt sincere enough for her. She wasn't sure if or when she would ever forgive him. She pressed her lips together and stared at the wall past James' head. She could invite him. But that would mean an entire evening of him showing off for the other Club members. On second thought...perhaps she shouldn't.

James sat there patiently, raising an eyebrow expectantly. Truth be told he had been asked many times to go with nameless girls, they had gone so far as to slip love potions into his drinks, but he had denied them, waiting for Lily to ask him. She never had and that had tortured him.
"You know, you could ask me. I'd be all for it." He smiled proudly, raising himself to his full height again, standing tall. "I'd be one of the best dates ever!"

"No, I don't think that-" Lily said immediately, putting her hands up as if she was going to push him away. But she immediately realized how awful she was being. She groaned and twisted a part of her hair into a tight ringlet as she stared at him. Her hands fell to her side. She could go alone and risk the looks of all of the other students. Or she could show up with James Potter. She bit her lip and thought for a couple of seconds before finally answering, "Yes." She breathed and nodded her head, "But just as friends, Potter." She put the disclaimer there so there would be no confusion. She had already told him that she wasn't romantically interested.
"Can you be ready in...like...five minutes?" She asked, scratching her head. She wasn't even sure that she could be done in five minutes. Luckily she was pretty sure that she still had some Sleekeazy's Hair Potion. So that took care of her hair. As for the dress. She mentally combed through her closet and decided on the purple dress that was somewhere in the back of the closet. It hadn't been worn in a while.

"Five minutes? Who needs five minutes when you're a wizard, Lily? I guess you must forget sometimes because of your Muggle roots." James waved his wand over himself and his clothes transfigured into a tux. "You know, I'm very good at Transfiguration, Lily, but I can't promise your dress would make it back on." James simply laughed as he fixed his hair to a more manageable look and slid his wand into his tux.
"Don't worry. That's how good relationships start. As just friends. You know though, Lil, this is a little weird. I've never been friend-zoned before. Do I still get hugs? Because I like hugs." James smiled shrugging like a little kid.
